SERVICES Housing Christian Appalachian Project - Leaking roofs … crumbling porches… no indoor plumbing … cardboard covering broken and missing window panes … little or no insulation … unsafe methods of heating… When you live in poverty not only do you not have money for incidentals but you often cannot afford to make even basic repairs on your home. You learn to make do with what you have. Inadequate, and often unsafe, housing impacts the young and elderly alike in Appalachia. CAP’s Housing program seeks to assist families in need through either provision of housing materials, repairs on their existing home, or new home construction. 
CAP volunteers largely staff the Housing program. While many are individuals who have made a year’s commitment to the program, the majorities are volunteers who come as a sponsored group from their church or college. These volunteer groups will often spend a week working on a particular site, and as a result, form a deep connection with the family. In addition, many college students spend their Spring Break with CAP during our annual Workfest building blitz. The Housing program seeks to work with other housing agencies, such as World Servants, in providing repairs and new home construction for families. The program also utilizes building materials received through Operation Sharing. |
